In Conversation with Dr Shachar Shapira
Last night we hosted an inspiring conversation with Dr. Shachar Shapira, Head of Sheba Medical Centre’s Humanitarian & Disaster Response Centre. Dr. Shapira shared powerful stories from the front lines of global crises – from fires to conflict zones – and highlighted the key principles guiding the Centre. One of the main themes he discussed was medical diplomacy: in a world often hostile toward Israel, humanitarian missions can slowly help shift attitudes and build trust where politics cannot. Sometimes the impact is immediate, as in Togo, and sometimes it takes patience and repeated presence.
He also spoke about the importance of sending teams to even the most challenging regions, using compassion to counter hostility – including ongoing missions in places like Jamaica. The evening left the audience inspired by Sheba’s blend of cutting-edge innovation and deeply human values, guided by Tikun Olam. It was a thought-provoking reminder that acts of healing can transform not only lives, but also relationships between communities and nations.
