Hate at Both Extremes

This past weekend, Melbourne’s streets were marked by two disturbing spectacles. On one side, brazen neo-Nazis paraded their symbols of hate. On the other, a far-left rally wrapped its own antisemitism in political slogans. Different uniforms, similar poison.

What we saw is what history teaches us: antisemitism is a horseshoe. The extremes of right and left, however far apart they claim to be, bend back toward each other in their hostility to Jews.

This isn’t theory. It isn’t “over there.” It happened here, in the heart of Melbourne. For our community, the lesson is clear: antisemitism wears many faces, but its aim is always the same. To intimidate, to exclude, to erase.

Our Response

Zionism Victoria will continue to call it out, without fear. We will work with government, civil society, and our allies to ensure that Jewish life in Victoria remains proud, safe, and unshakable.

Extremists may march. They may shout. But they will not define us.

Our story is not one of hate, but of resilience. It is of a community that rallies together, that finds strength in unity, and that holds fast to our connection with Israel and with one another. That story is louder, stronger, and longer lasting than any extremist chant.

700 Days Since October 7

This week also marks 700 days since October 7. For Israel, for world Jewry, and for us here in Melbourne, the scars remain deep. Forty-eight hostages are still held in Gaza — their families waiting, their community refusing to give up hope. We carry them in our hearts, alongside the memory of those who were murdered, as a reminder of why we remain steadfast in our unity and our advocacy.

In the face of hate, we choose community. In the shadow of grief, we choose connection. And in the long journey ahead, we choose hope. The best way to endure and to thrive is by standing together.

Be involved. Be present. Be proud. That is how we will endure.

Shabbat Shalom,

Zionism Victoria
