Statement on the Prime Minister’s Announcement of a Commonwealth Royal Commission into Antisemitism and the Bondi terrorist attack
Zionism Victoria welcomes the Prime Minister’s announcement of a Commonwealth Royal Commission into Antisemitism and the Bondi terrorist attack.
Antisemitism in Australia has moved beyond isolated incidents and culminated in a devastating terrorist attack. It has become entrenched across multiple domains and requires a coordinated national response. A Commonwealth Royal Commission is the appropriate mechanism to examine how this has occurred, where safeguards have failed, and what must change.
We acknowledge that the intent of the Terms of Reference of the Commonwealth Royal Commission are sufficiently broad to capture the full scope of the problem, including the ways antisemitism manifests across institutions, public discourse, online environments and enforcement frameworks. Anything less would risk addressing symptoms rather than causes.
This is not about politics. It is about facts, accountability and protecting the integrity and values of Australian society.
We know from history that antisemitism is an early warning sign. When it is tolerated and allowed to spread, the consequences do not remain contained to the Jewish community alone. Addressing it is decisively in the interests of all Australians.
We look forward to engaging constructively with this process and seeing meaningful outcomes.
