Following public speeches by Jewish student activist Josh Feldman, Zionism Victoria executive director Zeddy Lawrence and former mayor and AIJAC senior policy analyst Jamie Hyams, Glen Eira Council has voted to adopt the International Holocaust Remembrance Alliance Working Definition of Antisemitism.
The motion was proposed by Councillor Margaret Esakoff and seconded by Councillor Anne-Marie Cade.
All but one councillor spoke in favour of adopting the definition. The only speech against the motion was from Councillor David Zyngier, who ultimately abstained.
Saying he supported adoption of the IHRA definition, Mayor Jim Magee added, “Where we’re heading tonight, it sends the right message.”
Thank you to every one of the more than 2200 people who signed the Zionism Victoria petition urging councillors to vote for the adoption.
