Zionism Victoria welcomes the announcement made by Minister for Education, The Hon. James Merlino MP, in relation to steps that will be taken to ensure that all government secondary schools teach about the Holocaust and address the broader issues of racism and prejudice.
The introduction of new teaching and learning resources for Holocaust education, to be developed in partnership with the Victorian Jewish community and Gandel Philanthropy, will serve to increase the quality and depth of Victoria’s Holocaust education. We, along with many across our community, acknowledge the importance of such education in fighting Antisemitism.
President of Zionism Victoria, Sharene Hambur, noted that “the increased emphasis on Holocaust education was one of a number of initiatives we discussed with the Minister and his department in the wake of disturbing incidents of Antisemitism in Victorian schools late last year. This initiative will act as a vital tool, educating the next generation and ensuring that the lessons of the Holocaust are not forgotten.
