On Tuesday, 29 November 2016, Zionism Victoria visited the Tucker Rd Primary School in preparation for the upcoming Jewish holiday of Chanukah. The visit was organised by Zionism Victoria’s Connecting Cultures program, a free service offered to all Victorian schools and communal organisations aiming to foster multicultural awareness, tolerance and respect.
During the Tucker Rd Primary School visit, over 22 grade 2 participants enjoyed learning about Chanukah and loved an interactive story session as well as playing dreidel, receiving chocolate coins and decorating their own donuts.
Designed for state and independent schools, the program facilitates educational incursions and may include excursions to the Jewish Museum, the Holocaust Centre, Beth Weizmann Community Centre and the Lamm Jewish Library of Australia.
Over the years, the program allowed more than 10,000 students and teachers to learn about Judaism, Israel, the Holocaust and the Jewish contribution to Australia.
“Zionism Victoria’s mission of connecting Victorians with Israel is bolstered by our important Connecting Cultures Program,” said Daniella Gozlan, the program coordinator. “By educating and informing students and their teachers, many of whom have none, or very little contact with Judaism, Zionism or the Jewish community, Zionism Victoria enriches the understanding of Jewish culture and
history and our connection to Israel and helps cultivate the values of tolerance and respect.”
Tucker Rd Primary School teacher, Tamara Faiman, said, “Our students had a great time at Zionism Victoria’s Connecting Cultures session and learnt about this Jewish holiday in a fun, informal way. They will remember about this visit for a long time! Thanks to such visits, our students get an opportunity to develop an appreciation and pride for living in a multicultural society.”
