On the 3rd of June, Jews around the world will honour the memories of Eyal Ifrach, Gil-ad Shaer and Naftali Fraenkel z”l, with a “Unity Day”.
It’s almost a year since the terrible kidnapping and subsequent murder of these three Israeli teenagers. At that time, communities around the world, including Melbourne, gathered in solidarity to #BringBackOurBoys and again 17 days later when the tragic news of their fate was known.
A year later, the families of Eyal, Gil-ad and Naftali, together with the Mayor of Jerusalem Nir Barkat, are asking Jews around the world to join together again to honour the memory of their boys by bringing back the sense of togetherness and hope they felt as the Jewish world prayed with them for the safe return of their dear sons.
The Zionist Council of Victoria encourages you to like its Facebook page to follow the trail of unity quotes and messages and to share your own stories or impressions of unity using #UnityDay.
You may have other ways to connect with Unity Day. The initiative’s website has a range of ideas and educational materials for individuals and groups to use for their own Unity Day programs. Please be sure to post your programs and ideas on our Facebook page or send them to email@example.com, so we can share all the ways in which our community is observing this day of unity.
And….on 3 June, take a few moments to reflect upon the fact that “regardless of our challenges, there will always be far more that unites us than divides us”.
