Press Release – 4 August 2011

Construction of Lamm Jewish Library of Australia in progress

If you’ve visited, driven or walked past the Beth Weizmann Community Centre lately, you will have noticed that the property next door at 304 Hawthorn Road is officially a construction site.

“We’re delighted that building of the Lamm Jewish Library of Australia is now underway” says ZCV President Sam Tatarka.

“Following a planned construction period of 12 weeks the fit out of the library and resource areas will begin followed by the amalgamation of the Makor Jewish Community Library, the libraries of Kadimah, the Holocaust Centre and the Jewish Museum, and the archives of the Australian Jewish Genealogical Society and the Australian Jewish Historical Society in their new home” Tatarka said.

The new national library will be two and half times larger than the current Makor Library.

The Lamm JLA will be set up to support learning and research. There will be private areas for study and open areas for discussion, as well as resource areas for book clubs, children’s story time and film screenings.

Meeting space will also be a priority at the new building and will provide flexible options to meet current and future demand.  The Beth Weizmann Community Centre at 306 Hawthorn Road is currently booked to capacity most nights of the week.

Major donor and Chairman of the Beth Weizmann Community Centre Dr Danny Lamm says he is looking forward to the launch event towards the end of 2011 and hopes that the Lamm JLA will become a hub of community culture and activity.

“Together with my family, we anticipate that the Lamm JLA will be a unique resource, enjoyed and shared by many locally and beyond the Australian Jewish community. At a time when the topic of Jewish continuity is being constantly discussed we are proud to contribute to such an exciting project that incorporates our past and present, but most importantly, our future”.
