Press Release – 18 January 2009

Melbourne’s Jewish community to hold solidarity event for Israel

Melbourne’s Jewish community will come together in another peaceful show of support for Israel and the residents of southern Israel at Glen Eira Town Hall on Tuesday evening, January 20, 2009.

The solidarity event will feature 3 main speakers: Mr Yuval Rotem, Israel’s Ambassador to Australia; Mr Michael Danby MP and Dr Danny Lamm, President of the Zionist Council of Victoria. The official proceedings will begin at 7.45pm.

The program will also include a live audio link up with civilians in southern Israel who since 2001 have been the target of more than 10,000 missile, rocket and mortar attacks by Hamas terrorists in the Gaza Strip. One million Israeli civilians are this morning still in Hamas’ intentional line of fire despite 3 weeks of Israel’s defensive military operation in Gaza and Israel’s announcement of a unilateral truce this morning.

The solidarity meeting is being organised by the Jewish community’s Russian and Hebrew-speaking organisations – the Am Echad Federation, the Shalom Association and the Israeli Centre (Hamerkaz Ha’Israeli), together with the Zionist Council of Victoria.

For security purposes, members of the media are requested to contact the organizers regarding attendance.
