Prime Minister John Howard Awarded the “Jerusalem Prize
The Prime Minister, the Hon John Howard MP will be awarded the prestigious Jerusalem Prize by State Zionist Council of Victoria President Dr Danny Lamm and Zionist Federation of Australia President Philip Chester at this month’s JNF Annual Gala Dinner.
The Jerusalem Prize is jointly presented by the State Zionist Council of Victoria, the Zionist Federation of Australia and the World Zionist Organisation of Israel. It recognises the outstanding contribution of an individual Australian to the Jewish community and to Australia’s relationship with Israel. The award is traditionally presented in the framework of “Jerusalem Day” celebrations, in observance of the reunification of Jerusalem in the 1967 Six Day War.
Upon receiving news of the Prime Minister’s acceptance Dr Lamm said, “The State Zionist Council of Victoria is extremely proud that the Prime Minister John Howard will be awarded the Jerusalem Prize. We believe that the Prime Minister’s staunch commitment to Israel and support for the rights of Israeli people to live in peace has been constant and sincere, particularly in light of the tumultuous events of the last year. It will truly be an honour to present such a worthy recipient with the Jerusalem Prize. Furthermore, the prize being presented at the Jewish National Fund gala event on May 20 is testament to the bond between our large, mainstream organisations.”
Philip Chester, President of the Zionist Federation of Australia stated, “The Federal Zionist leadership is gratified to publicly recognise Mr Howard’s ongoing support of freedom and democratic values, and the Prime Minister’s strong commitment to the right of the State of Israel to exist within secure borders. This is a true celebration of the support for Israel and the Australian Jewish community at the highest level of the political echelon.”
Tom Borsky, President JNF Victoria acknowledged the high level of cooperation between the JNF, SZC and ZFA, saying “We are delighted that the opportunity to combine forces with the State Zionist Council and the Zionist Federation has presented itself in such a positive and collaborative way. “
The JNF Gala Dinner on May 20 precedes the significant day of June 5 2007, marking the 40th anniversary of the commencement of the Six Day War, and the most auspicious outcome of the war, the reunification of Jerusalem. Community tribute and celebration for the 40th anniversary have already begun with last week’s Yom Ha’atzmaut community concert and Yom Hazikaron commemoration, both featuring a special focus on Yerushalayim. Many more community events have been slated for the next few weeks as we approach the anniversary.
