Update – 28 May 2007

Dear Advocates,

***DON’T MISS ITAMAR MARCUS FROM PALESTINIAN MEDIA WATCH (PMW) IN HIS ONLY PUBLIC APPEARANCE IN MELBOURNE SPEAKING ON YOM YERUSHALAYIM – TUESDAY 5 JUNE 2007 *** For more, read below the news headlines!!

Today’s Age featured an article with the headline ‘Israel vows more raids on Hamas’. The focus of the article should be that an Israeli was killed yesterday in a Hamas rocket attack on Sderot. This is the second fatality in less than a week. As is usually the case with The Age, the focus is on Israel as the aggressor, on Israel’s air strikes on Gaza, and not on the reason why Israel is striking targets in Gaza. The constant barrage of rocket attacks on Sderot is repeatedly ignored. In an interesting contrast, the headline on the same issue in The Australian reads ‘Olmert pledges to stop Hamas rockets’ . The difference between the two is subtle but important.

I understand that the person who files the report is not the same person who creates the headlines, and that a letter to Editor about a headline might be ineffective, nevertheless, the more letters than come in voicing discontent at deceptive headlines, the less they can be ignored.

I have received two different videos on Sderot which give a bit more insight on the day to day fear of the residents there, and the damage that each rocket does to the city that often does not get portrayed in the news.
